Empowering people to repaint the colours of imagination in their lives.

Project Canvas is a joint initiative of Starts Foundation and Sky is the Limit – Ashimit Udaan, created to support individuals whose lives have paused due to serious illness or injury.

In a country where the majority live in rural areas and millions face poverty, one health crisis can shatter a person’s future. Many are left unable to work, study, or support themselves stuck in silence and struggle.

Through Canvas, we identify such individuals and provide the help they need from funding medical care to offering education, skill-building, and income-generating opportunities. We call them “Canvas” because they’re not broken, they are just ready to begin again with new colors and courage.

Inspired by the journeys of Maiya and Laxmi, this project was born from belief and continues with purpose to help individuals turn the page and repaint their lives with the colours of resilience, optimism, and strength.

Starts foundation wants to continue this initiative in collaboration with any other organizations or on its own.

Maiya’s Story : Rewriting her canvas

canv-1

Maiya Bishunkhe, a 28-year-old woman from Kathmandu, has faced more challenges than many encounters in a lifetime. Born without her right hand, she grew up learning to adapt, persevere, and find her own way with quiet strength and unwavering determination. Her life took a sudden, difficult turn after she gave birth to her child, a moment that should have brought joy, but instead brought emotional, physical, and financial turmoil. Raising a child as a single mother with a disability while facing family complications and limited resources, Maiya felt overwhelmed and uncertain about her future. Her days became a struggle not only to survive but to be seen and respected, especially within her own family. When we met her, we saw more than just someone in need, we saw someone who deserved a new beginning. Through Project Canvas, we helped Maiya regain her independence by providing her with a prosthetic hand. We also offered financial support for her child’s education for two years, giving her the time and space to focus on finding employment and rebuilding her life. Today, Maiya stands tall not just as a mother, but as a strong, independent woman who continues to rise above her circumstances. Her journey is one of quiet strength, resilience, and new beginnings which is a true reflection of what Canvas is all about.
