Emergency Relief That Reaches When It Matters Most

Aid for Living Life is a crisis response project by Starts Foundation, which was initiated by supporting individuals and families affected by floods, landslides, earthquakes, and pandemics in Nepal.Till now, we have collaborated with Himalaya friends, Milijuli Foundation, Stichting Bombo, Apan Radhemai Youth Club and NPL Social Welfare Foundation.

The project began in 2017, when a Nepali and a Norwegian came together during the devastating floods to offer help to those in urgent need. That initial effort provided relief to 200 families, marking the start of a journey rooted in compassion, urgency, and care. Since then, Aid for Living Life has extended its support to various communities, including the distribution of over 1200 customized packages during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our approach is local, responsive, and personal. We keep a balance between economic efficiency and locating the most vulnerable families. In order to enhance the economic efficiency, we identified the stores, compared the prices and selected the most cost effective one. We located the most vulnerable families by proper observation, research and selection process. After selection, we customized All Relief Kit based on their specific needs. Those kits included essentials like food, hygiene supplies, medicines, clothing, and in some cases, we offered direct financial assistance. We worked closely with local authorities, police, and grassroots volunteers to ensure the relief reaches people safely, respectfully, and efficiently whether through door-to-door visits, mass distributions, or coordinated local events.

One of the key aspects of our approach is community involvement. We work closely with local youth, empowering them through leadership training and providing opportunities to actively support their communities. This not only strengthens our relief efforts but also plants the seeds for long-term community care and ownership. We formed a volunteer team covering every ward and guided them throughout the process by providing them with various training. The experience helped them grow into confident community leaders. They didn’t just deliver aid but they built trust, connected with people, and discovered their own potential.

We remain committed to continuing Aid for Living Life as long as there is a need. And while we are always prepared to move forward, we warmly welcome partnerships with individuals and organizations who share our vision.

Flood/Landslide Relief

a1

Floods and landslides don’t just bring physical destruction, they disrupt entire lives, often leaving people with nothing but fear and uncertainty. Nepal’s steep terrain, heavy monsoon rains, deforestation, and weak infrastructure make it highly vulnerable to these disasters. On average, over 300 incidents of landslides and floods occur annually, with dozens of lives lost and thousands displaced each year. The numbers may seem small globally, but for each family affected, it’s everything. And while the damage is widespread, it’s often the smaller, rural communities that suffer the most, quietly, and without enough support. 1. Sarlahi ( 2017 ) In 2017, many families in Ramnagar ,Baurahawa Sarlahi were affected by flood. We distributed the essentials [1 torch, 1 tent, 2 water purifiers, 5 soaps, 1 towels,1 mosquito net, 2 mosquito coils, 15kg rice, 3 kg Lentils, 5 ORS] to 165 flood affected families. This was our first response. We had to complete it in two weeks. With no prior experience , it was a bit of a challenging process for us. But the support from the government authorities and the local people really encouraged us to keep this project alive. 2. Birgunj ( 2023 ) In 2023, a small family in Birgunj lost their home due to heavy floods. They had already been supported by the Aid for Living Life project before, and this disaster added to their hardship. Starts Foundation helped them find a temporary place to stay and provided food for a month. This support gave them some relief and hope during a very difficult time. 3. Kalikot ( 2023 ) In Kalikot, two single mothers lost their homes because of landslides. Aauja lives with her children and a grandchild, while Bela takes care of her big family, including daughters, sons, and a grandson. Life became very hard for them after their homes were destroyed. Starts Foundation reached out to help them with basic supplies and comfort. It gave them the strength to start rebuilding their lives.
